Voices Briefs Georgia House Children & Youth Committee

Voices joined with the Georgia Family Connection Partnership in a briefing to members of the House Children & Youth Committee chaired by Rep. Judy Manning (R-Marietta).  Rep. Manning invited both organizations to make presentations on Jan. 23 that would help new and returning members of the committee to understand critical issues involving the state's young people.

The status of health insurance for children of low-income families became the topic of interest as Voices policy director Lauren Waits offered an update on the federally subsidized PeachCare program which currently faces an $131 million budget shortfall.  Waits urged committee members to call on Congress to reauthorize funding and take further action if funds where not immediately forthcoming.

See Lauren on Georgia Public Broadcasting's "Law Makers" program from the Jan. 23, 2007 broadcast (lead story).
