Education Bills Advance; Children & Youth Committee Urges Study of Children's Budget
SB 515, the Governor's bill to expand the funding of remedial classes to include grades 6-8, passed unanimously in the Senate. The original bill was amended to correct an error made to the equalization formula in 2000. The bill now moves to the House.
HB 1358, the Governor's Truth in Class Size bill, which sets class size requirements, will be heard in the House tomorrow.
House Children and Youth met today and favorably recommended HR 1079, which creates a study committee to look at the concept of a children’s budget.
The House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee voted 4-3 in favor of HB 987 providing for concurrent jurisdiction of juvenile courts in cases of adoption where the juvenile court has terminated parental rights.
The House Education Subcommittee on Academic Achievement forwarded a substitute to HB 1239 to the full committee with a recommendation that it pass. It requires the state Board of Education to devise a course of study to educate eighth and ninth graders on criminal law, particularly as it relates to sex crimes. The Subcommittee forwarded without recommendation SB 79 requiring the Board of Education to adopt a curriculum for elective courses in the Old and New Testaments. The Chair stated that because of time constraints he would recommend that the full committee hold a hearing on the bill in lieu of a subcommittee hearing.
