House Passes FY 2006 Budget; Senate Authorizes High School Bible Study

The House passed its version of the FY 2006 amended budget.  The Senate will continue its work on it next week.

The Senate passed SB 79.  Under the Education and Youth Committee’s substitute which passed with one amendment, SB 79 allows local school systems to offer in grades 9-12 elective Bible courses in the Old and New Testaments, their contributions to history, the arts, etc. The State Board of Education must adopt a curriculum by February of 2007 for teaching the courses in a non-devotional manner.  Schools would also be permitted to offer courses in other religions based on factors such as demand by parents and students and the contribution of these religions to history and culture.

The General Assembly will be in recess on Tuesday, February 7th (for Coretta Scott King’s funeral) and Friday, February 10th.
