Day 35 - 4/11/2007

Trudging to the finish line

>> Back to Daily Highlights

Despite having reached an agreement with the Senate on the FY 07 Supplemental Budget, work on the floor of the House has slowed to a virtual standstill.  The House had only one bill on the calendar today, having met yesterday to consider only one resolution.  In addition to passing SB 70 which deals with banking laws, the House welcomed U.S. Congressman Jim Marshall. Significant in his remarks to the representatives was Marshall's pledged that Congress would not only continue but perhaps increase SCHIP funding levels, and he urged the General Assembly to expand PeachCare.

The Senate has voted on approximately 11 house bills each of the last two days.  Today, Senators approved HB 153 which required DFACS to notify stakeholders in foster child proceedings within 5 days of the movement of the child.

Senate leadership has taken note of the slow down in the House.  At a meeting of the Senate Rules Committee this afternoon, Chairman Balfour continually noted the fact that the House is not taking up Senate bills.  He made it clear to Representatives who appeared on behalf of their bills that the Senate would not schedule House bills until the House began to move some Senate bills.

The schedule for the rest of the Session is as follows-

April 12th- legislature recessed

April 13- legislature convenes for 36th legislative day

April 16- legislature convenes for 37th legislative day.

April 17th- legislature convenes for 38th legislative day.

April 18- legislature recessed.

April 19- legislature convenes for 39th legislative day.

April 20- legislature convenes for 40th day and then adjournes Sine Die!
