Here’s what Voices is doing to advocate for the Safety of children in
Georgia:
• High quality intervention services must be made available to all families
with newborn children. Parental support that includes education, resource and
referral services, and healthy child development assessment is crucial to
preventing abuse and neglect. Georgia could drastically reduce the number of
abuse/neglect cases by confronting the abuse of our youngest children, ages
0-5. We support the adoption of comprehensive parenting support and early
intervention programs that can be made available to all families across the
state.
• DHR’s recent settlement of the Kenny A. lawsuit has led to the creation of
guiding policies which will ensure timely and appropriate care for children
involved with child protective services and the foster care system in Fulton and
DeKalb counties. State officials have voiced their intention to adopt Fulton
and DeKalb guidelines in Department of Family and Children Services programs in
every county of Georgia. This will require community collaboration, public and
private sector investments, and timely evaluation. We support statewide
implementation of Kenny A. standards and adequate funding to ensure Georgia’s
children receive the services they need.
